2012 SHAWNY Scholarship Comptetition

This year, the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY) is pleased to offer two $750.00 scholarships to assist students in the Western New York area who are working towards a degree in speech-language pathology or audiology.  One scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate senior speech-language pathology or audiology student and a second scholarship will be awarded to a current graduate student. 

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

1.      Senior undergraduates applying to graduate school OR current graduate students in the areas of speech-language pathology or audiology (including final semester graduate students, as the award may be applied to professional fees or student loans).

2.      Student must currently attend one of the following regional schools:    Buffalo State College, SUNY at Fredonia, and the University at Buffalo

3.      Must be a SHAWNY student member (you may join at this time for a fee of $20.00- see enclosed application form if needed).

4.      Participation in a final interview if deemed necessary by the scholarship committee.

The scholarship will be awarded based on leadership, community involvement (weighed heavier for undergraduate applicants), clinical experiences (graduate applicants only), an essay, academic performance, and additional experiences.  The scholarship recipients will be notified in early April.  This year’s scholarship award is a one-time payment of $750.00 to one undergraduate and one graduate recipient.  Winners will be presented with the scholarships at the SHAWNY Banquet on May 1, 2012. 

**The deadline for this scholarship is March 26, 2012. This includes all scholarship application materials, letters of recommendation, official transcripts, etc.  There are no exceptions! 

Special note: Students, you need to take this deadline into consideration when requesting letters of recommendation from your professors,clinical supervisors, etc. to allow them adequate time to complete your request so they may be mailed as part of your completed packet by 3/26/12.  Missing letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and/or application materials will result in automatic disqualification of your application.

Qualifications

This scholarship is restricted to a graduating high school senior in Western New York who plans to further his/her education and has been accepted to an institution of higher learning.  Applicants must be individuals who have a speech, language, and/or hearing impairment and have benefited directly from speech and/or hearing services.

Considerations

Applicants who meet the qualifications listed above and who exhibit one or more of Dena’s attributes will be given high consideration.  Applicants who show determination, are spirited, adventurous, and/or sociable, do not let obstacles stand in the way of pursuing their dreams, and are involved in student government or other student activities will be highly considered.

Procedures

Applications must be accompanied by 1-2 letters of reference using the form provided.  Completed applications must be postmarked by: March 23, 2012.

Award

This one time scholarship (amount to be determined) will be awarded on May 1, 2012 at the annual recognition dinner for the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York. The winner will be notified approximately 3 weeks prior to this event.
